Have loaded a hard drive via a USB adapter and it is recognised by the bios but does not appear in My Computer. How can I rectify this please ? OS is XP Pro.

other than that... maybe the USB port you are using is not powered. Are you using a hub? Is this a regular HDD with a power adapter or a 2 1/2" one with two USB plugs.
I had trouble until I discovered that even with the two plugs in the USB hub it wasn't getting enough power. Luckily the hub had an socket for an power adapter and once power was supplied we've had no problems.
