it allows you to use 2 (or more)computers with only one keyboard mouse and monitor, you use the switch to select which of the computers the keyboard and mouse controls and which one the monitor is displaying.

Another way to use two computers is with VNC. This allows one computer to appear in a window on the other. When the window is active the keyboard and mouse operate the remote computer.

VNC works over networks so all you need is an ethernet connection to the remote computer. It is an excellent way to operate a laptop computer from a desktop PC console when at home.

In the case of two desktop PCs it is a good idea to have a KVM switch as well for when the computers are booting. The switch simulates the mouse and keyboard to unconnected computer.

This is only for the electronic versions. Do not get the ones with a multipole mechanical switch. They are bad for the computer's ports.
