Thanks for this, kept getting bogged down with binary and digital numbers
A byte is eight bits or
1 1 1 1 1 1 1 1

which represents
128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1

Add them all together and you get 255.

Many thanks for the explanation, you have shed some light on a mystical area of computing.
This is assuming the bits aren't signed.

If they are, then you reserve the last bit (most significant) for signing. A 1 is a negative number, a 0 is a positive number.

So you'd get 127 if doing it this way.
