microsoft updates problem

i hope someone can help please.
i have had a little yellow shield symbol show in the task bar(?) area on my comp screen, down by the clock, saying updates are ready for my computer.
i clicked on it today and the updates for ms windows took place, it took about half an hour or so to complete. but since then it has not let me open any web pages up for any sites - an error page came up each time i try.
so, i did a system restore to yesterday and im ok again, but of course the yellow symbol is there waiting again for the updates.
anyone know please why the error page kept appearing when trying to open a web page and how i can correct this if/when i install the updates again.

sorry? erm i dont know .... it just says ms windows updates

I had this problem.

Take your firewall off - install the updates, then put your firewall back on again.

It worked for me.
