oddly that's what should happen (almost)

on a used "r" cd/dvd explorer shows -
free space = 0 - that's 'cause tou cant write any more to it
on 9.56Mb - that's how much data is contained

here is how a cd shows properties and in my computer

mine shows that as well, but when I right click and open explore it asks me to format the blank disc!
format isn't an option for CD/DVD - so windows shouldn't even be offering that option - the size/status info comes from track 1 CD/DVD r should switch the format option off
and (this is only a guess) 9.56Mb isn't much of a prog these days (is that just an example, are they all saying 9.5mb - or do you mean 9.5Gb (dual layer DVD))

and do you have more than 1 optical disc (is it a lappy?)

2 things come to mind
1 is a duff batch of discs - are these backups you've made?
2 is if the discs are commercial ones - the drive is either faulty or the drivers are wrong

look in hardware manager - and delete the drive entry
reboot the machine - it should reinstall the drivers

also make sure all the connections to the disc are good (both ends)
