Bummer... make backs ups from now on...
I have a dell and went onto the Dell website forum and managed to get links to download something to make it work - i think it is the windows xp upgrade that sorts it out - i'll try to find the link for you, but need to shoot out to pick up my son from Cubs!

P.s I alos thought I had lost everything when I reinstalled my XP, but I have managed to find it all eventually ;O)
Agree with make back ups from now on..... I'm sorry to hear you've just learnt the hard way

If your reinstalling the PC that crashed then 2 things.

first, unless you've had to replace the hard drive then most of the stuff would have been retrievable without too much effort or cost (and a fair amount may still be but stop installing stuff now if you want to get the stuff back!)

Second, you need to download and install the sound card drivers for your computer, if it's a brand name computer then the makers website will have the drivers.
When a computer "crashes" then unless the hard drive is broken then everyting on the hard drive is probably retrievable.

If you have done a reinstall of Windows and formatted the hard drive then it may be difficult to retrieve anything (although there ARE utilities that you can try).

If you had asked around BEFORE doing a reinstall of Windows you probably could have got everything back.

You can do a REPAIR install of Windows that reinstalls Windows without deleting anything. If you had done that all your personal files would still be there.
or it could have been the windows service pack 2 that fixed it.

Thanks for all the help.

When the computer went down all i got was the Switch on /off situ and my mate who is an it bloke said it needed a Format as did Fujitsu Siemans... I did back up most of my stuff but switched on one day and a Computer needs to restart thing came on.... Never any problems untill then.

Fujitsu sent out a disc to ensure it was not a hardware prob and ... Seems it was not but was totally locked out.

I have just found out that the speker conection on the Face of the computer gives me sound.... It has been a while since i was into all of this....
