If your computer meets the minimum system requirements for XP, then yes. The following web page tells you how to check.

When you boot from an XP install disc, it will check your system for compatability first before asking you what you want to do. There are XP "upgrade" discs for 98, which will keep all your files. Computer fairs usually have them.
