Someone, and I think it was Ethel, gave details of a free programme to check if unnecessary programmes were running at start up.

My lap top takes a ridiculous time to start up, so I would like to know where to download this programme from.please.

I have done all the usual clean up and defrag things.

If your laptop is taking a long time to start up, I suspect there may be too many unnecessary programs loading at start up - such as Office, your mp3 software, your phone software - all manner of things that you have no intention of using during that session.

As well as slowing start up time, these programs hog resources, slowing your pc down.

If you are not comfortable messing about with the 'internal workings' of your computer, I suggest you download this little program - Startup Inspector:

http://www.windowsstartup.com/

It will clearly show you exactly what is loading automatically, and you can untick the boxes to stop it happening. Only do this with the programs you recognise, and always make sure your firewall and antivirus is loadng at start up.

I forgot to say you can easily see what programs are automatically starting by going to:

Start - run and typing

msconfig

in the box. Click the 'startup' tab and see what's there.
so does cc cleaner ethel

Thank you both.

I mistyped, as it is actually the 4 yaer old desktop which is slow to start up, and I already have cc cleaner installed on it. I wasn't aware that cc cleaner could help in the start up

The laptop is fine, so I will do the msconfig thing on both and compare.

My problem is that even if I see that a program isstarting, I don't know enough to recognise if it is essential.

With startup inspector it will tell you what the application is, usually, so you can decide if it is necessary or not

Ethel with cc cleaner if you look in tools you get 2 progs
1 start up (tells you what you can stop also)
2 uninstall
so you get a lot in this one package
