Corel paint shop pro photo
I would like to learn how to alter photographs and after seeing the cost of the programs decided to download a free trial just to see if I could do it. Problem is, and this is going to sound really stupid. When I activate one of the tools, I cant seem to turn it off after. Does anyone know how to do this as I am getting knowhere at present. Sorry to be so thick!!!!!!

Without meaning to be rude, on the basis of your initial attempt I suspect you are going to struggle. Graphics programs can be some of the most difficult to master.
They are all a bit different and you would be better off learning a program that doesn't cost.
Get GIMP. It is powerful and free.

I think it's also worth mentioning that programs that aren't microsoft-based have very different interfaces, and this can be off-putting for people who are just branching out for the first time.
Glenbar, keep on trying and you'll find you get the hang of the thing eventually - however, with free downloads there is often a vital thing you can't do, so don't be surprised to find you can't save your image as a .jpg for example.
