Microsoft Office Word

We have a template of our letterhead, (header & footer) on our Desktop.
How do I enable it so that a letter can be written on it to e mail it? When I bring it up I can't get the cursor to appear, just get 2 crossed arrows, making it impossible to write on.
Any help would be gratefully received.

Is the letterhead graphic too large? That cursor normally appears when you try to move something on the document.
