photoshop will not allow me to paint, patch etc etc

HI

I have photoshop cs4. i works fine, but sometimes just decides to stop allow me to paint or use the plaster tool or the clone tool etc etc, it just sudden stops making its mark, if that makes sense

any ideas. i usually close it down and use cs3, which never has this issue, although i prefer to use cs4 hence why trying to sort it

Are you sure you are not trying to work in an empty layer?

sometimes when that happens to me I find I've inadvertently selected a tiny bit of the image somewhere else, while I'm trying to work on the rest of the image. See if you can click 'deselect' on the selection menu; if you can, that's what you have done.

the empty layer will make no difference when it is a new file.

and nope defo not highlighted somethign by mistake as thought that so hit deselect to make sure....
