If, say, you've got a TalkTalk email address, you'll be able to both send and receive if you connect via TalkTalk but you'll only be able to receive if you connect via a different ISP. (ISPs only permit their outgoing mail server to be be used if you're actually using their service to connect to the ISP).
Assuming that you're connecting via the correct ISP, it seems that the outgoing server information, in your email client, has become corrupted. (That's quite a common occurrence because your antivirus software changes the settings every time it scans your mail. Things sometimes become 'screwed up').
Check that you know the outgoing (SMTP) server address for your email account. If you're with one of the major UK ISPs it should be listed here
http://www.idl.uk.com/email/isp_settings.htm
and/or here
http://www.kitz.co.uk/isp/dns.htm
Then do the following. (These instructions are for Outlook Express. Most other clients are similar):
Go to Tools > Accounts > Mail
If you've only got one email account it's probably already highlighted. Otherwise click on the appropriate account to highlight it.
Click 'Properties' and then 'Servers'.
Check that your SMTP server details are correctly entered. (Correct if necessary).
Then click Apply and OK.
If that doesn't work, delete the entire account and start again. To do so, start as above, but click 'Remove' and 'Yes' instead of 'Properties'. Then click Add > Mail and fill in the various fields to recreate the account.
