Hi
Having had HP printers for 'always' I have just bought an Epsom SX100. It was cheap and although noisy compared to HP the quality is v. good and I am happy with it. Just one thing I cannot understand and that is the inks!

It came with pack of 4 inks, one of which is black. Now, I have only had the printer for a week and have only used it for printing letters and the occasional web pages - hardly anything at all.

Yet.... my black cartridge is showing over half empty already! whilst the other 3 are nearly full. Have I made an error in buying Epsom, or have I set it up wrongly? A black HP used to last me three months.

Epsom quote about 6.50 for a black cartridge and I was only paying 14 for a 17ml HP.

Any advice please?

I get mine from Ebay....just received 3 packs of 4, for 18.95.
Not Epson brand, but they're fine....guy trades as moreinks xx
Hi,
I have had Epsons for years and never had a problem.
I suggest that you go into Printing Preferences and see if your settings are checked for "Black only". Uncheck this box and i think you will find that your black cartridge will last much longer.

> have just bought an Epsom

Epsom is a race course.

You mean Epson.
....VHG.......smarty gave a party but nobody came........;-) xxx
couple of points - generally black is cheaper and bigger - there is no point in printing black with your colour (less and costs more)

printers are cheap - because ink is expensive
a new printer generally comes with a "starter" pack of inks ... not full size
it's not just epson that do it - they are all ro@@ing b@stards ... and they don't even wear masks or have ugly dogs

a webpage is a full cover full colour job - just a couple will drain ink.

it's the price you pay for colour

my laser is more than 10 years old - it does 10000+ prints per 65 cartridge ... it never dries up
it's black and white
I recently bought an HP printer and the black lasted hardly anytime at all. When I queried this with Staples they told me that the inks were only trial sizes which maybe what it is with your Epson.

Thanks Ac and Mctavish re the 'size of ink' points.

I will look further at this

the inks that come with it are only ever half full.

I bought replacements from Amazon. They seem to work fine if they are not Epson brand as long as all cartridges are non-Epson.
I think you are better always buying the inks that belong to the printer but that is just my personal opinion.
I have an Epson DX4400. Its a 3 in 1, takes 4 cartridges. My local shop sells all 4 compatibles for 15 the set. Normally I get a months usage per set, but I do print a lot of photo's and DVD covers. The printing quality is excellent. If I was just using it for normal use I reckon they would last two to three months.
I find Epson cheaper than my other printer a Canon.
Buy Compatibles, I have had Epsoms for tears and the last four years used compatibles. I have an R340 with six cartridges that would normally cost +/-60 But compatibles only cost me between 12 & 20 dependant on the supplier, a good saving.
