Been sent a file from daughter's school as part of her homework, that's the extension .pub is this similar to a pdf type doc? and how do I open it. Thanks

The chances are that it is a Microsoft Publisher file, and as far as I know there aren't any compatible programs.

You can download a 60 day trial version of Publisher from here which should allow you to read and print it, while you ask the school to send files in PDF, RTF or Word format in the future.

Yes, the school has foolishly sent you a publisher file without actually checking to see whether you have publisher installed!!

It isn't just having publisher installed - you will need to have the exact same version of publisher that the document was produced in.
The school should be supporting its teachers to save their final 'public' versions of publisher files as pdf files - they can download a free pdf maker program if they are strapped for cash.
Publisher is good for what it says it is ie producing print-ready layouts for printers. It makes pretty documents but they are HUGE file sizes and most end-users won't be able to open them anyway.
I wish I had a pound for every time I've had to deal with this issue.

there is backwards compatibility - my 2003ver can also open pub 2000 and 98 files (I assume 2007 also includes 2003)

as already said - because the whole point of publisher is layout and style
the format of choice is pdf - depending which version of office - 2007 has a pdf plugin which would give every one a fighting chance - and a properly configured pdf could be relatively small - you don't need comercial quality for projects
