help - size of hard drive

I recently bought an automatic backup drive and was delighted with it. It is only the size of a pocket calculator, very handy. Connects with a USB. It has a 320 GB hard drive.
A friend of mine now wants to buy one but does not know whether HIS hard drive on a lap top is large enough and wants me to to tell him. I am afraid I have never used a laptop nevermind to be technical minded over it. How can I find out for him how much space he has left on the hard drive of his laptop. He says he will bring it tomorrow for me to have a look at it. I have no idea of the make and model.

open my computer, right click on the drive and select properties.

Surely it doesn't matter what size his hard drive is, or how much space is on it, to use an external hard disk?
