I just created a shortcut on my desktop & named it for a site I use . I'm using Firefox which is my default browser yet the shortcut icon is internet explorers blue e . Why's that ? Don't appear to be able to change it either , can I?

Suggest you open your Firefox browser and via the tools menu/options click the general tab and on the bottom ensure that firefox is actually your default browser.
