Photoshop - History Tool
I am an avid user of Photoshop and I'm always using it to retouch images. I find that the history brush tool is particularly useful when reverting back to an original part of an image, BUT my history tool isn't doing what it's meant to be doing! Instead of reverting back to a previous look, it creates this darkened, sharpened look - sort of like a mix between burn and sharpen.
I'm very frustrated and it would be most helpful if you could help me because I need the history tool and now it won't work!

You need to reset the tool. Using CS2 as an example.
To do this - make the History Brush Tool active by selecting it in the Toolbox Palette.
Now from the Window Menu select Tool Presets.
From the Tool Presets Palette click on the small triangle type arrow next to the words Tool Presets.
From the drop down menu select Reset Tool. That should reset the History Brush back to default.
