slow running computer

How can I speed up my computer. It seems to be running really slowly recently. Are there any settings or something I can change to sort this out. If there is something I can do, then please explain slowly as I'm no computer expert !!!!!!! The computer runs vista if that helps Thanks, Dave

Defragment your hard drive(s). Have you installed anything new recently? Some programs run background tasks/services. Sorry, I have XP and not Vista. Can you see what is taking up memory by launching task manager?
