Do I need a disk?

Have just bought a new computer - do I need to load a disk from an Internet Service Provider to connect to the internet using broadband?

If you're using a router already, and if your new machine comes with Windows 7, Just connect it with a network cable, and the OS will do it all for you.

If you are connecting through a USB modem or cable LAN to router (router has internal modem and connects to telephone line) you will be best to use the disc, yes. Settings can be difficult and time-consuming to set up.
It is possible using the connect wizard, using settings taken from your provider's website settings. You will need to check this.
Alternately, you may be able to download a set-up file/disc (although I have never seen this)
(The Orange wireless router software is pretty easy to do from disc. It installs router software sets up settings and LAN, and authorises connection to Orange. To add another connection, one just puts disc in again)

You dont HAVE to use a setup disk.
I am with Virgin and while I did use a disk the first time years ago I have never used a disk since as I know the settings.
So IF you are fairly technical (and the setup is simple) then you could probably set it up yourself without a disk.
If you are NOT technical (or it is a complext setup with maybe a wireless router) then best to run the disk and let the disk set it up.
The problem with some setup disks is they plaster the ISP name all over the place like on your browser.
