If you haven't already got it WOT is a useful add-on for Firefox https://addons.mozill...US/firefox/addon/3456 for letting you know if sites are safe before you visit them.

I think it all comes down to you using your judgement about what site to be trusted or not. WOT pops up on every site telling you 'that' site should be untrusted. You have to make the decision whether you would want to 'allow' the site or not.
