I know many people like Firefox browser, but the only use I find for it is its Ad block feature. It seems you can't do anything without add-ons of one sort or another. Please someone - how do I get rid of that list of sites visited with a yellow star showing against each item and what do the stars signify? I've discovered how to delete them temporarily but they keep coming back.

if the keep re-appearing then you didn't remove them.
Do you mean the list that drops down when you type into the address box in the navigation toolbar? Or something else?
''how do I get rid of that list of sites visited''

If you mean the list that automatically appears when you start to type, go to Preferences > Privacy. Under Location Bar, choose 'nothing' where it says 'when using location bar suggest:'

The above is on a Mac but I presume it will be similar on a PC...

I was meaning the list that drops down when I type into the address box in the navigation toolbar. After more fishing around it seems that the yellow stars are in fact bookmarks that I have made at some time. There must be a (probably) simple way of getting rid of them - I'll find it!
Just a quick search gave this as its first result and it might help you http://www.labnol.org...ss-location-bar/3636/
Go to Tools > Options > Privacy.

Use the menu in the 'Location bar' section to select 'Nothing'.

Click 'OK'

Oops!

I've only just spotted that Snags has already posted that info. At least we're in agreement! ;-)

Here's how to turn it off

You can use Firefox without any add ons so I'm unsure what your other problems are

You might like to try tools> start private browsing then no history etc. will be saved

I think I've found it! I've looked at the references you've given and followed various advice. What I've found is that when the list with the yellow stars is open (the drop down list from the address bar), I then click on one of them which will open the bookmark in the usual way, with the address on the address bar, together with the yellow star. Then by clicking on the star from that position I'm given the option to delete the bookmark. Hope this makes sense. Thank you all for your interest. Bye for now.
