There is free software you can download, such as Eraser, to combat this:-

You can then delete your history as normal and then run Eraser to erase all unused disk space.
I trust you haven't been looking at naughty pictures!
No doubt someone will say something else.

Providing you clear your Temporary Internet Files the images will be cleared.
There may be links to them on your DOS drive, but only an expert could access those.
Even the DOS files disintegrate eventaully, and as the DOS memory is probably not that large for images they would eventuall "drop off the edge" there too.

Every site you look at will have it's contents stored in your temporary internet files, if you clear these all the computer does is clear the index entry that says where the files are and free that part of the hard drive up to be used again. Until that part if the hard drive has been written over again a couple of times at least it is still possible to retrieve the deleted information.
Two main things to remember
1) EVERYTHING you look at on the web is downloaded to your computer FIRST (every bit of text, every picture, every bit of video).
2) Even when files are deleted they may STILL be stored on your computer. This can be for weeks or months. If you sold the PC someone else could easily find these deleted files if they had the right software.

take note of the last answer,if you sell your computer on or dump it,take your hard drive (s) out and hit them with a VERY large hammer that's the only way to stop your info being got at by unscrupulous people, and believe me it takes a lot of effort to smash these hard drives, if your are selling your comp on hard drives are cheap and even cheaper in CEX stores,ok they will have to install an operating system for that,
