If I buy a new pc with( built in ethernet connection 10/100/1000 ) does it mean I can just plug the yellow lead from the modem/router in and thats all I need do

Well assuming the computer has say Windows on it, and Windows is set up to "look" for the network (which it probably is) then yes you just plug the cable in and it should work.
