When I install two hard disks what are the best jumper settings?

errr, the best ones are the correct ones!

main drive set to master, second drive set to slave

Thank you. I asked the question as I didn't know the correct ones. What does cable select do?
cable select would set the drive status as master or slave depending on which of the 2 connectors it's plugged into, however it requires an IDE cable that supports it, which not all do so it's generally easier to go straight for master/slave which overrides the cable select.
