Ethernet Connection intermittent fault

I have got so used to doing this it has become normal practice but I would love a better solution.
Most of the start ups result in no Gigabit Connection on the inbuilt Intel 82566DC Ethernet resulting in "Local Area Connection, a network cable is unplugged" message.
I can go to Device Manager where it is shown as disabled. I re-enable it, restart and it is then OK until I switch off. Sometimes it will start up OK next time sometimes not.
I have tried updating the driver, rolling back the driver to no avail.
I have no free PCI slots to fit another card.
Any constructive ideas would be most welcome ?

KInd of odd, because normally, if the interface is disabled you wouldn't get the "unplugged" message. The only thing I can suggest is to unistall the network adaptor in device manager, restart windows and let it redetect it.
