vista security tool 2010
is this a virus? i seem unable to get on the net using either Firefox or ie8 without being told that i am under threat etc. however, Google this and you discover that word like 'clone from the malicous rogue anti-spyware family' and 'another rogue anti-spyware program from the same family as Vista Antispyware 2010 malware'. what do i do - try to remove it (seems long winded and potentially difficult for someone like me!), get it remove professionally, or ignore it?

There are programs that can remove spyware, such as malwarebytes, but this spyware may stop you even getting to the site to download it.
Go to this site (on another computer maybe) and download malwarebytes, then put it on a memory stick, move the memory stick to your computer, then install it and run it.
http://www.malwarebytes.org/
How can you ignore it if you cant get to the internet? You wont be able to do much.
Also, you dont know what else this spyware is doing to your PC (capturing your keystrokes or turning off your genuine security software) so it is VERY important you get rid of it.
Anyone with a bit of PC knowledge should be able to help, do you have a friend or relative who is good fixing PCs?
