A dongle, although not incorrect as such would more often refer to a mobile broadband adaptor.

just look for a usb wireless adaptor. (though in all honestly if it's a desktop PC you'd be far better connecting it using a Ethernet cable)

no - cable not the answer as I'd trip over it. And I want it a couple of rooms away.

You can use a powerline ethernet connection, which connects the ethernet cable via the mains. Just plug one in near the PC and the other near the router and Bob's your uncle, no wires to trip over. I'm using the ones that came with my BT Vision box, but I saw some at a reasonable price in PC World last week.
