Ipod Touch upgrade

Is there any simple way to install a system upgrade on my Ipod Touch? Apple's procedure seems horrendously complex, and there is some doubt expressed on websites as to whether I'll be able to keep my existing applications, which I would really like to do. Thanks!

Hmm. Managed it, after spending hours on the internet, and more hours carrying out their convoluted procedures, including trying to interpret Apple's on-screen terminology without making a mistake and wiping everything clean. Considering how clever their devices are, their user interfacing is an utter disaster. Oh well...
