back up disk
It occured to me that as my computer was getting ion a bit (4 years old) I should back all the info on a back up disk - went through the proceedure to find when I got to the end I had to refer to some really complicated (for me) on line instruction as there is no provision for me to put in a floppy disk. A little window comes up with a message the back up utility cannot connect to the removeable storage facility etc - also have now received a fatal error warning suggesting a recently installed device is the cause. Should I just delete the back stuff I did and start agin?

What version of windows are you using? and what are you using to do the backup?

Sounds like you are using XP Professional . Yoy need to get an external hard drive . Depending on the amount of data you have one of about 320 to 500 GB would be ok preferably a powered one and use a third party backup program like Macrium Reflect which is free and also creates a system image to restore your hard drive should anything happen.
