Replacing printer ink cartridges...

I only ever use the printer for writing letters. Could I just replace the black ink cartridge the next time they need changed?

It depends if your printer has individual cartridges, but yes it can be done. :-)
yes of course you can, but you could always have your present cartridge refilled cheaper than buying another cartridge, or buying a refill kit and do it yourself.
Refilling is cheap but some cartridges have a special chip which informs the system when it's nearly empty. If the cartridge is chipped and is allowed to become fully empty, air can sucked into the printing system and damage it. Try Wilkinsons or online at 7dayshop for good price cartridges.

if your printers cartridges are not chipped then should be ok to refill.

Set the printing quality as low as you can to save ink.
I think some printers have a method of using the colour inks to make black or near as possible for when the black runs out, Check the manual yours could be one of these
