is there a virus which disables the hard disk as a boot option?

No, not as far as I know.

that's set in the BIOS (i.e. hardware) not in the software so any virus would have to be written for a specific make (and model) of computer.

A virus can effect the boot sector of the hard drive, which would stop the computer booting, but if the "boot from hard drive" options isn't in the BIOS I'd suspect a faulty hard drive first.

Thanks Chick. Thats what I thought. I,ll look at the BIOS setup now that have found the handbook.

The one that was supposed to destroy your 'C' drive in one foul swoop is a hoax.
Just set up bios correctly (or load Optimal Defaults) .. also set boot sequence and remove/disable entries you will not use to boot (like FDD)
