I'm having my computer upgraded to Windows 7 in a few days' time. I'm told I'll have to have a user's licence - how do I go about getting this, please?
Also, when it's done will I have to start from scratch and sign in to sites like AB again?

Whos' upgrading it?
Normally they would by a copy (including the licence) and install it, so you would pay them for the licence.
"when it's done will I have to start from scratch and sign in to sites like AB again?"
If you mean will you need to create a new account for AB, no. If you mean will you get automatically signed in, that will depend on the way in which the upgrade is installed. If it's actually run as an upgrade, then nothing should have changed. If it's done as a clean install it will depend on whether the person doing the job does a files and settings transfer.

If you've go to get a license then you may as well buy and install it from a English windows 7 disk.
There is very probably no difference between a USA and a UK disk TBH, (never checked that one) but you are going to have to buy the disk to get a license and it makes more sense to use the license that comes with the physical disk.

If your son is bringing the disc from the USA to install make sure that it is a genuine copy and that it hasn't been used before and is not an OEM copy. You shouldn't have to buy a licence it comes with the genuine disc. It should activate over the net after install if it is the real thing. We use USA discs here in Australia there is no difference between the versions as you set your region codes etc. when you install it.
