My wife`s laptop has developed a problem. Firstly, it froze. She turned off manually with the on/off switch, then tried to restart. It stayed on for about 5 seconds then turned itself off. After another 5 seconds, it turned itself on again. This off - on sequence continued indefinitely. It resisted all attenpts to stop it or turn it off. The only way to stop it was to disconnect the mains and remove the battery. When the battery and power was reconnected, the same thing happened. It`s a HP Compaq Presario. Any ideas please?

It's very likely the BIOS has become corrupted, though re-seating the RAM chips and internal hard drive may prove helpful, though I doubt it. I would certainly remove the hard drive and attempt to back-up all the data. A virus check whilst it's out of the laptop would be wise. If you cannot do it, then a reliable service shop should.
Good luck.
