Might be worth simply searching for one of the lost files by name too, the mac can do strange things with the bin sometimes.

In agreement with all the other posters here, running without regular backups is silly. Apple's time machine makes it really easy, and there are others that do equal and better jobs. However there might be a ray of light, if you haven't powered off your system since you emptied trash. Make sure no applications are running, then if you have a desktop Mac, turn off the power supply, if you have a laptop, hold down the power button until the laptop powers down. Leave for a couple of minutes then turn your system back on. Sometimes a forced shutdown will reinstate the trashcan with the items you have deleted
Did you set Time Machine, restore it to a precious date and you restore your images. If you haven't try some mac data recovery programs. Try these,

Or for some data recovery services.

As a matter of fact, sending your Mac to for data recovery service is not best option. The first thing you should do - immeidately stop writing any data back as you know Mac OS X generate new data very quickly thus overwritten can happen easier. Then install a do it yourself Mac photo recovery app to perform recovery. Learn more from this article: http://www.anysoftwar...photos-mac-trash.html
