I would like to find a way to convert xls files into a pDF but am nervous to pay and download from the internet where I believe there are such programs, but with all the risks of downloading from strangers.

download a free program called Cutepdf. This will do it for you, no need to pay anything.
Or, you might like this, http://www.tucows.com/preview/602899
Anything which can be printed, from any program, can be converted to a pdf. There are loads of (very similar) free programs which will do the job. This is one of the most popular:
http://www.cutepdf.co...ts/cutepdf/writer.asp

You simply install that program on your computer. Then, when you want to produce a pdf from a program, you click on 'Print'. The box which opens will allow you to choose which printer you want to send the file to. You'll find that you're offered a 'virtual printer', called CutePdf. Selecting that 'printer' will create a pdf from your document, in your chosen location.

Thanks everyone. Ii will try both sugestions.
So quick too....!
Why do you need special programmes? Click Save As then choose PDF in the format drop down menu
Following MS Excel help files on-line gives this

Also there is another called dopdf which is probably still free.
Milvus, that option isn't a standard one in all versions of office, it is in 2007 onwards but not in earlier versions.

I'll add another vote for cutepdf, used it on hundreds of computers without problems and the download from Chris's link is perfectly safe.
The free Office 2007+ plugin does a far superior job of making pdfs.

In Word it makes links for the table of contents. Just one of the many good reasons to buy Office 2010.
I use the free download of Primo pdf.
This attaches itself to the print options of your computer. So when you choose 'file - print' primo pdf comes up as one of the print options, and when you choose it the pdf file is generated and saved in the folder you choose.

I finally used Nibble's suggestion from Tucows. It couldn't have been easier and worked a dream.
I use Office 2003 so couldn't take advantage of the Microsoft one.
I attempted to download Cutepdf but it disappeared after downloading.
