If you can get Virgin, there's no doubt. They've just insalled a new router which is ready for 400mb - fast enough for proper HD TV.
If you visit the Virgin site and put in your postcode, they can tell you if fibre optical cable's available.
All the other providers use copper cables, which are Victoriann technology, and make silly speed claims.
Virgin's service is brilliant, too. It's free, (I think that's unlike Sky) and they don't repair equuipment, just bung in brand new stuff.
I don't work for Virgin, honest!

I am fully with BT...telephone and Broadband...and am pleased with the service. Furthermore, if things go wrong (as they occasionally do) I only have one firm involved to sort out a complaint: unlike a relative of mine who was being passed from his ISP to BT and back again.
It's worth bearing in mind that BT has all the Telephone Exchanges and most cables through which Broadband is conveyed.
At the moment it is costing me £75 per quarter for Broadband (10GB per month) plus all telephone calls within the UK (each up to 1hr.) are free.
The download speed is 6.9 and appears to be the fastest in my area of Gower.
