I've had my computer about 4 or 5 years and Ive always had the free Avg
scan which it did once a day. For the last week it has stopped doing it
and I don't know why or how to get it back. Can someone tell me what I should do to rectify this matter?

I would uninstall your existing AVG.

Reboot the PC.

Then download and install the latest free AVG from here

Or uninstall AVG and install Avast which is another free anti virus programme which I personally think is better.

Thankyou both for your answers. Much appreciated.x
There is no need to do a virus scan daily. I only ever do a scan if my PC starts playing up at all.

thankyou for your answer daffy, I shall wait until my son-in-law visits later in
the week, and he'll sort it for me. If I try and do it by myself I'll end up doing
something wrong.
I have to agree that AVAST is better than AVG. I had AVG bought version for ages then it started playing up and had something wrong with it and it gave me such grief. I got AVAST free one and am fine with that. I know it's personal opinion but I'm fussy over such things and thought I'd stick to AVG but now glad I didn't.
AVG is a pain in the a$$, I much prefer Microsoft Security Essentials which is free from the Microsoft website. It is much less of a resource hog than AVG.
Microsoft Security Essentials is remarkably trouble-free.
I recommend you replace AVG with it.
