There was a lot of problem with internet connection and one weekend did not get a service at all. I spent a lot of time listening to recordings of the which postcodes had problems. When I spoke to someone one day they offered me a £2 refunded for a weekend of nothing. Left them and now with BT. Every week or two something comes through door advertising Virgin but I would not go back.
Virgin Broadband. The two main ingredients needed for a World Of Warcraft profile.
I have the 60Mbps fibre optic service and am really happy with it - get around 45-50 Mbps at low usage periods.
Cost really depends on whether you get a phone line or TV packages also. I have only phone and broadband and it costs £35 a month.

the service is fine when it's working.
when previous incumbents NTL installed the hardware in our area, the junction box for the estate proved to be too small for the amount of households that subscribed. Consequently it's overfull and if the engineers need to access it, they can't close it properly and it often bursts open, letting in the rain, etc.
I lived with a degraded service for months last year because Virgin know what the issue is but refuse to do anything about it. Currently the box is open to the elements, and I've reported it twice in the past week with no action. Only a matter of time before we all lose our service again.
btw, a combined TV/phone/broadband pack costs me about £65 per month.

I was with NTL/Cable & Wireless before Virgin bought and rebranded them. They had the worst, and I mean by a long way in my experience. customer service ever.
Given what grasscarp has said not a lot appears to have changed, I had my phone with them and spent 2 hours hanging on the phone, until cut off.
In my experience, and in full concurence with grasscarp, I wouldn't go back ever.

I've had Virgin Broadband 60mb/XL tv (HD as well)/phone line package for about £75 monthly since the service was started in our area. Only ever had one outage for about 10 hours.
Customer service has gone down slightly, but I've never been given duff information.
It always pays to argue the cost yearly as they always find something to offer you as an inducement to stay.
