I have ditched MacAfee and high renewal costs and installed Microsoft Essentials which has good reviews and is free..
My question is, should I now activate Windows Defender? I have never had this on and am unfamiliar with its functions.
I use CC cleaner amd Malaware Bytes on ocasions.
Thanks

Hope you get the free edition of Malwarebytes and always untick the McAfee trial run box when you download it. Furthermore, now that you have 'ditched' McAfee, have you checked to ensure that all traces of it ghave gone from your computer.

ALSTON, you are the first person ever on any fourm that I have heard say "get rid of ccleaner" one of the best ,if not the best free programs available on the internet, "YOU DO NOT HAVE TO USE THE REGISTER CLEANER PART OF THE PROGRAM IF YOU DONT WANT TO", otherwise the best cleaner on the market in my opinion,???? whats your alternative then, pray tell
Looks as if I have touched a tender spot.
Surely CCleaner's primary job is to clean out the Registry. That being the case I DO NOT trust it and am Not alone in that direction.

I have no problem with CCleaner, it gets rid of dross with no problem. However I wouldn't use the Registry editor part of it.
Windows copes quite well with a scrappy registry and editing it is a skilled process. Any one who wants to let a registry editor loose on their pc, must also be prepared to do a complete re-install of Windows if it goes wrong.
I've been tinkering with computers now for about 14 yrs and I have only edited the registry once and that with Microsofts guidance. The best registry editor is to just re-install Windows using the disks. With a reasonable broadband connection the updates are picked up quite quickly.
I tend to re-install about once a year, obviously backing up everything first.
