Any decent email service should include a 'mail collector' facility, which allows you to have mail sent to another account automatically forwarded to your new one. GMX (which I use) certainly does:
https://www.gmx.co.uk/mail/mail-collector/

If the reference to Google in your post though means that you particularly want to set up a Gmail account, and then have mail forwarded to it, you need to use the features of the other accounts to enable such forwarding. Scroll down to 'Auto-Forwarding Emails into Your Gmail Account' here for an explanation:

(I still urge you to consider using GMX though; it's vastly more intuitive than Gmail is).
A gmail account can. It setup in the Pop/Forwarding section.

thanks both of you, gmx is showing an error message when I try loading up a new account - I'll try later.....
DTC - I'm currently having trouble with gmx via the latest version of Firefox (82) on my laptop; it works fine on my desktop on Firefox 81. I've made Mozilla aware but no solution so far. In the old days you installed a particular version of Firefox, so could reverse an update, but nowadays you can only install the latest version so I'm stuck on my laptop.
