I have played with this a few times, and on a couple of occasions it has 'locked up' my computer. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know the cause?

Update your graphics card's drivers.

Also, what are your computer's specs?

It seems to work OK for a while, with perfect images, then it just decides to freeze, even if what I am looking at is not particularly graphic. Anyway, the info from the control panel reads:

HP (Laptop), Windows XP Proffesional Version 2002
Intel(R), Pentium(R) M Processor 1400 MHz 585 Mhz, 256 MB of Ram.

Hoepfully will mean more to you than me.
You are short on RAM. For XP its advisable to have a minimum 512mb. You can upgrade ram on a laptop but not graphics Im afraid.
But, if you have a look at www.flashearth.com you may find that equally as good. Once on screen, clic on dark area in centre. In rt bottom corner, enter postcode and off you go.

In the top rt corner you will see several choices, ie microsoft/ask etc, each of them vary. Some give views whilst others don't, just have a look and see.
Also, what's your graphics card? You can right-click my computer, click properties, then the hardware tab, then the device manager button. It'll be under the display adapters setting.
