Is file sharing always illegal? I have found a website that asks for a years subscription charge to download some file sharing software for music for your ipod, the site look alright and I found it on another review website. It just seems that one would get alot of music for a very cheap price which seems a tad dodgy. anyway any enlightment would be handy tar.

File sharing is perfectly legal.

What is illegal is sharing copyrighted work without permission from the person owning the copyright. If you're downloading copyrighted music and don't have permission to, then it's illegal.

Well how do I know if I have permission or indeed this site that asks for the fee has permission? The music is popular music I would think that it has most definatly been copyrighted

What site is it? It should say somewhere on the about or FAQ pages perhaps?

There are dozens (possibly hundreds) of similar sites which either require an annual payment or accept a one-off payment for 'life-time membership'. In every case, all you get for your money is some software and possibly 'support'. (From what you've written, it sounds as if the site you've found is charging an annual licence fee to use their software). The payments never include copyright fees.
