I have had the same problem neil, I bet you love talking to the technical support as well ;)
the reality is that there are too many users for the exchange, the exchange needs to be completely updated, the line drops you get is because of the sheer volume of broadband users, they cannot fix this problem and everyone I know has the same prob.
its a big prob for BT as it would cost a looot of money to improve the service, I have terminated my contract with them because of this. I now have virgin cable (it has to be a cable connection because internet providers like sky only rent the line of BT so you would still get the probs)
virgin cable broadband is very good, no loss of service and cheaper than BT, you dont have to have the tv,phone or anything just the broadband. you may consider it when you are fed up with indian technical help, engineers who say there is nothing wrong or when you keep losing your connection.

I agree ! I get so irate when they don't admit that the problem lies with them cos in the past I have completely cocked my computer up by trying to change the settings etc thinking that the problem is at my end when in fact it's at theirs ! We have a contract to stay with them for a year but they can sod off, why should we pay 29.99 for something that is no good. Even dial up was quicker than this, and that's saying something lol.
Oh well, only another hour and ten minutes to go till the download is done.

I had my contract terminated at no cost due to poor service, I argued and argued until they saw my way of thinking.
basically I based my arguement on the fact that I paid for an internet connection that I wasnt getting, I complained about the time lost speaking to a lot of technical people and the inconvienience of waiting for engineers to visit.
they allowed me to drop my contract and the same day I booked virgin to fit cable broadband which is super :D
