This is odd. NTL no longer exists and is now Virgin.

Is this cable broadband, or down the phone line? The user name and password should have been sent to you in a welcome pack or given to you when it was installed.

Is this what you are using?

well, yeh it has all been converted to virgin, but the original case for the disk has the 'Welcome to....' etc...

its on an ethernet connection, we set up an account down the phoneline.. which works, and the current connections that are connected are

1394 Connection
and
Local Area Connection - Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC
How long has it been?

It takes a few days for them to calculate your optimum speed, etc.

Also, what were you downloading? Just because your line supports 8mb or whatever, doesn't mean that you can acheive that everywhere.

http://www.speedtest.net

Run that test (with no other internet-using programs open, and no other computers using your internet connection), and report back what speeds you get (choose the recommended yellow server).
Question Author
1952 kb/s download
and
187 kb/s upload

how come i can never get anywhere near those speeds?

and i have had this connection for nearly 2 years now
OK, seems like you're on a 2mb connection?

Those speeds would fit in if you are.

What are you trying to download? Speeds vary greatly with what you're downloading. Your line speed is only the maximum you could ever get.

The computer you're downloading from may be handling several people at the same time. If it can upload at a max speed of 100kbps, and there are 10 of you downloading, then each of you will get 10kbps. Regardless of how fast your line is.
