Got a call from a lady who has ADSL USB modem. Suddenly the machine had started rebooting every time it connected. Turned off "Restart on errors" and tried again. Now after connecting, the screen goes black and the machine appears to hang.
Brought it back to my place, booted up, then connected to my router. As soon as the connection was made, screen went black and machine hung.
I've never come across owt like this and am running out of ideas...

oops - thought I was in Computers when I posted this (one of those days...)
Not really sure...

I'd try and reset the network drivers if possible in some way.

Perhaps try booting from Knoppix (or some other GNU/Linux live CD), then connecting to the router. If all works, at least you know it's a software issue and not hardware.

fo3nix, thanks for the reply.

I was already pretty sure that it was a software issue as the problem occurred regardless of whether the machine connected by dial-up or via the router.

I've now solved the problem (although I still can't understand the mechanics of it). I uninstalled AVG 8 (which was she had been running since its release with no problems).

I've now installed Avast, and all is OK.
Bug in AVG with the networking code?

It's pretty low level, so conceivably could cause a complete restart.
