Updating windows

Hi My PC running Windows XP Home does not update it is set for automatic updates but does not. I only had it re-installed last week in the shop and it updated ok then,when i try now it goes thro the procedure 'of updating 9 updates and when it tries to initialize these it fails. I have tried what i can do in Microsoft support (very limited) but still no go. If i just plonk in the installation disc and re-install will this do the trick.?
With---- AVG , Pctools firewall , Threatfire and Spybot search & destroy. Thx
