Embedded sound files in firefox

I have a web page with an embedded sound file that plays perfectly in IE but won't in FF. My remote helpdesk staff are however hearing it just fine. I have tested this on lots of pc's and laptops including some brand new Asus tripl-e's, and it doesn't run,
I am assuming there must be some kind of tweak for the embedded files to play in FF but nothing I have tried so far works. I am using FF3 and the latest java. Any suggestions gratefully received.

at last a reason for using firefox!

embedded music and dark chocolate are both evidence that the devil does exist

even music sites generally have the music as a positive selection (that's a hint)

AC, I'm no good at cryptic crosswords and am clearly not as clever as you are. So can you spell this out? Or can someone else who doesn't mind sharing their skills?

Cheers
I'm saying that it's better to include a play button - that way people get a choice - and you aren't relying on privacy/code settings in the browser ... but if you want to get hissy about it ....
AC doesn't like background sound on web pages, and for that matter nor do I, but then most of the time when I'm browsing I don't have the speakers on anyway.

IE will happily play background sounds by default, but Firefox won't play them without an appropriate plug-in which can handle whatever type of sound file you are using. This link will show you the code needed to do it nicely.
if you want visitors to your site to stay for more than 10seconds then do as AC says and put a play button for the sound, don't force it on unsuspecting people as soon as they browse to the site.

If ever I go to a site that plays sounds at me on arrival my back button is clicked a couple of seconds later and I will go and find a less annoying site.
It's not often that ACtheTROLL makes a technical error, but just to correct his first post:

Whilst embedded music does prove the existence of the devil, dark chocolate is positive evidence that redemption is always a possibility.

Thanks Guys, and FYI the embedded sound file has full play controls shown with it. I also do not approve of web pages that play irritating noises for no reason. However there are many occasions when the reason is very important, in this case for the teaching of foreign languages.
Chuck, this is why students use the pages in question - they aren't unsuspecting but are fully expecting to hear information.
AC: the students' epc's are only provided with FF, not IE. Not a choice I would have made either, but there you go, the task is to solve the problem not whinge about the world not being made my way.
lol lil

>>I have tested this on lots of pc's and laptops including >>some brand new Asus tripl-e's, and it doesn't run,
if the student's only get ePCs which are only provided with firefox - no problem - or point in supporting IE at all?
>>the students' epc's are only provided with FF, not IE.
I'd say this was more than "nice to know" information.

anyway - time to stop whingeing about people not asking coherent questions - leaving out important information .... and not being good at crosswords (actually some of the cross words you used were indeed quite good.....
and try to solve the problem
(before we do - just a thought - why not let them download the sound bites and play them? gives them offline access ..... or is there something else you've omitted that only allows embedded access downloading ?

you might want to include a link to google as well
(another hint)

I accepted the randomness if the world years ago

It's the way some people expect others to "know" pertinent facts which are then thrown into the pot as "justification" ...
that I whinge about!

AC, you're still not getting it.
The sound file works on some machines that have FF but not others so it is a question of plug-ins, not html code as explored in your link.
Since you ask, the embedding tool is part of an array of similar tools provided by the site and as we have paid for it we would like it to work as described.
So it is quite important to locate the plugin that is absent on some machines but not others.

Huderon - thanks for the link which i have tried but again unsuccessfully - it is definitely an evasive plugin that is lacking rather than a code problem.
there you go again lil

>> I have tested this on lots of pc's and laptops including >>some brand new Asus tripl-e's, and it doesn't run,

now you say
>>The sound file works on some machines that have FF >>but not others

just what do you expect?
's got to be said - if you are a teacher - and give your students this level of detail - no wonder the standards continue towards rock borttom

I've played chinese whispers that have had more foundation than this question
Hi lil

What type of files are they ? It should be fairly easy to find the FF plugin for them if you fun FF and use Tools/Add-ons/Browse all add-ons. That will open the FF add-ons page and there is a link on the left hand side for Photos, Music & Videos.

The page that link leads to had very little on it, but it does have the quick search bar at the top with a search already set up for addons for photos, movies and music - just click on the right arrowhead at the end of that bar to pull them all up. I've had a quick look at the results and most of them seem to be for photos and videos, but there are some there for music files too.
Oh yes, sorry about the link - like AC I assumed your page was automatically playing background music, and the link was simply code which would let you have a player bar to give people the option of playing background music, which is the nice way to do things.

AC, if you read my question it says that my helpdesk staff can access the material. So sorry to have omitted that they are doing that on computers.
If you want to make personal remarks can I suggest you do it on one of the nerd forums?

Cheers again Huderon - I've pinned it down now to a Linux OS issue. So will talk to the techguy who installed it in the first place.

Will that be alright AC, or will you need to make more wild guesses and remarks about my professional role and competence to satisfy yourself? if so, knock yourself out, but do remember while doing so that you were not able to suggest a solution that worked.

bottom line is even if I knew (and a quick search did provide many options to try) I wouldn't support a business without being payed ... and you've got a cheek expecting free advice on a commercial problem .... if your support staff couldn't fix it - it's a fair indication that you are barking up the wrong tree .... your ever changing facts were (are) the real bugbear (yea but no but).

As for the I was never able to suggest a solution - I never would have - mailny because of your inability to provide any consistent facts
>>>my helpdesk staff can access the material.
>>>So sorry to have omitted that they are doing
>>>that on computers.
even then you couldn't be bothered to say if they were using eees or PCs, linux or windows, firefox or IE

If you could have given a coherent account of your problem -we could have just cut to the chase and told you to consider changing your support options.

Huderon was good enough to take you seriously - 'fraid I'm not that good
