Contact address list

Have had a hotmail email address for years+ and never had the problem of my contact address list been taken. The only way this seems to have happened is when I signed into Live Windows. My contacts are now being targeted using my email address to try and sell goods etc.
Is the only way to stop this, besides not opening the emails, to change my email address.
Have you any other ideas?
