I think you need to explain yourself a bit more.

Are you trying to move the ethernet cable that comes from your modem from your PC to your laptop?

If so, your laptop may have a connection for a phone line modem AND an ethernet connection.

Make sure you are not trying to plug your ethernet cable into the socket that is for your modem, they are very similar.

The ethernet socket on your laptop should have this small icon next to it

If you are NOT trying to move your ethernet cable can you explain what you ARE trying to do.

Want to connect laptop to my broadband as I don't have wireless router yet. As stated above my connection that goes into my desktop PC wont fit into my laptop socket, socket to small or cable jack to large.
How old is your laptop?

Every laptop I know of for the last 4 or 5 years has had an ethernet port built-in, somewhere.

But if not, does it have a PCMCIA or Expresscard port on the side? (about 1.5 inches long, like it could accept a credit card almost, with a flap covering it)?

If so, you can buy a card that will have an ethernet port for your modem to connect to.

But to be honest, it'd be just as fast to order a wireless router.
