Then tried to used my debit card to pay and was told 'this card is linkled to a Paypal account' which is correct but I didn't know it prevented you from using it to pay direct.

My PayPal account takes money direct from the PayPal balance first if I ask it to, but you ought to have the option of using an alternative card if you've already registered it with them first.
Suggest you contact the seller and tell them PayPal is playing up, then they won't think that you are being slow in paying, I know I would appreciate it if it was me waiting for payment.

mayennaise I had a huge problem this morning with trying to pay for an item I'd bought - I couldn't get into my account to finalise the transaction. Eventually rang the help line (and they were very helpful btw) who tested a few things out and said it was probably because of the maintenance being carried out over the weekend. It can affect different accounts in different ways. Was advised to try again tomorrow - however, tried this afternoon and it went through like a dream. Perhaps you've experienced a glitch because of this.
Thanks for all your answers. Have now transfered money from bank to Paypal to cover the payment. I tried to buy something last week using paypal and the same thing happened so this seems to be an ongoing problem. I thought Paypal automatically debited funds from your linked bank account if it needs to. Why didn't it this time?
Some payments methods (like CC or linked Bank Account) CANNOT be made on some purchases. I looked into this before, and it is something to do with security of transactions and the way the Paypal system looks at it.
If Paypal also tries to use one method you select, it may say .. "this card cannot be used .... " when it cannot reserve/check the funding.

I had a problem last week trying to pay for something with Pay Pal and the site comes up with two options, 1/ Paypal and 2/ Credit/Debit card.
The trouble is that you click on the Paypal box (which you want) and the hand icon goes over to the other box and then you get the reply " This card is not for Paypal" ( or similar message. I found that it is the box with the hand icon on it which is the operative one, consequently when you click on the box that you want to use it selects the box that you do not want. The hand icon is too confusing and should be removed.
Putting the dot in a round button would be a better option.
Incidentally, I tried to buy something five times and then gave up. NO SALE!
